Bay
Electric selected to restore two national landmarks for over $1.7
million
Newport News, Va. –
When the National Park
Service and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers wanted a contractor
they could trust to complete over $1.7 million in renovations to
two national historic buildings, both agencies chose Bay Electric
Co., Inc.,
a Chesapeake Bay general and electrical contractor and one of
Virginia’s fastest growing small businesses.
For the
National Park Service, Bay is the prime contractor in charge of
over $800,000 in renovations to the Appomattox Manor House in
Petersburg, Va.
Over 250 years old and badly
in need of repairs both internally and externally, the Appomattox Plantation
Manor House once served as home to U.S. President Abraham Lincoln for three
weeks during the latter days of the Civil War.
Bay is renovating the
exterior of the Manor House’s two story wooden structure as well as repairing
the utilities, improving accessibility, upgrading the mechanical and electrical
systems and installing a new fire suppression system.
The Bellwood House
For an
even larger renovation project, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers selected Bay to
remodel the Bellwood House in Richmond, Va. Originally built between 1796 and
1804 and used as a military headquarters during the Civil War, the Bellwood
House has served as the Officers Club for the Defense Supply Center Richmond
since 1942.
As part of the renovation
project, estimated at $902,000, Bay is replacing all interior finishes,
repairing moisture damage, upgrading existing restrooms and upgrading the hot
water heating system. Also, Bay is installing a new electrical primary feed to
the historic building.
Despite substantial asbestos
remediation added to the original contract on the Bellwood Manor, construction
is ahead of schedule.
“Bay is pleased to have been
chosen to help preserve these important pieces of American history,” says John
F. Biagas, CEO and President of Bay Electric. “While our company has worked on
numerous new building projects for government agencies throughout our area, we
are excited that both the National Park Service and the Corps of Engineers
selected Bay to take care of these national treasures.”
